The Cape Cod Islanders are in a position that the organiztion has never seen before, sole posession of first place in the Eastern Division of the NA3EHL by five points over the Lewiston Auburn Fighting Spirit at the anuual Christmas holiday league break. What makes this more special is that the Islanders have won ten straight games, including two over the Spirit, both in Lewiston. "This holiday break could not have come at a better time" coach Punsky said "injuries and fatigue have been taking its toll on us. Those players have been going at it hard since the beginning of September, they have earned this break." As complimentary of his team as Punsky is he knows that the work is not over. "When the season starts up again in January, we will be the team that everyone is trying to knock off. Sure it's great going into break in first but we can not be content with what we have done so far, we truly have not accomplished anything. That is the post game message I delivered on Saturday."
When the Islanders return from break they will be facing a daunting schedule, they face the LA Fighting Sprirt 3 times in Falmouth. They will face the New England Stars (winners of 12 straight heading into Christmas) 3 times, 2 on the road and once at home. They face Western Conference leaders Jersey Shore Wildcats, the Lockport Express and the Wilkes Barre Miners at the January league showcase in Lockport. They will travel to New Jersey to take on the Skylands Kings in February and play the Minutemen, Generals and Wild all before the end of the season. So the break has been well deserved, but it needs to be ued effectively. "Once the puck drops again January 9, it will be a dead sprint to the finish, we have to be ready to compete or all the work done up until now won't matter. Those players have earned the right to be in first place but we have to work even harder to stay there." coach Punsky said
