Islanders Name Jay Punsky Head Coach
Cape Cod, MA: For the past six seasons, Dan Hodge has coached and/or owned the Cape Cod Junior A hockey team. The first 2 seasons he was the Head Coach and General Manager of the Cape Cod Cubs, while the past four years he has owned and coached the Cape Cod Islanders. In those six years Hodge guided his teams to two regular season titles and 2 playoff championships. He has seen his organization compete in three different tier III leagues, IJHL, NSHL and currently the NA3EHL. Today Dan Hodge decided to step down as head coach and name Jay Punsky the new Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations of the Cape Cod Islanders for the 2015-2016 season. “It has been a great ride coaching this team, but as the owner I need to concentrate my efforts on the business and take on new challenges. Jay Punsky is going to do a great job with this team, he came highly recommended from people I know and respect in this game and his track record speaks for itself.”
The Islanders entertained resumes from across the country and the world. Applicants came from different backgrounds, some were former minor league professional players and coaches, some were high school coaches and some scouts for tier I and tier II junior programs. “We had a ton of interest in this job and it was a tough process, but in the end it was a really easy choice. I knew Jay was the perfect guy for this job after the first interview.”
Coach Punsky spent the last two seasons with the Bay State Breakers Junior Hockey program of the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL). With the Breakers, Punsky served as Assistant Coach of the Junior A team and Head Coach of the Empire Junior B and U18 AAA Tier I teams. In addition to coaching, his responsibilities included recruiting for the entire organization and assisting in the placement of players to the collegiate level. In Punsky’s two seasons with the Breakers the organization placed five players at the NCAA DI level and 10 at the NCAA DIII level.
Prior to joining the Breakers Coach Punsky served as the New England Scout for the Manitoulin Islanders of the Northern Ontario Junior A League. From 2007-2013 he was the Head Coach of the Middletown High School Men’s Varsity Ice Hockey team (Rhode Island). Coach Punsky was also a goaltending instructor for the Puck Stoppers Goaltending School and the Rhode Island Hitmen. In 2007, he graduated from Salve Regina University with a dual Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice. In 2012, he graduated from New England College with a Master's in Sports and Recreation Management with a concentration in coaching. Coach Punsky also has a Level 4 Coaching Certification from USA Hockey. As a player, he played Junior A hockey in Canada for the Manitoulin Wild (Northern Ontario Junior A League) and the College Lefleche Titans (Quebec Jr. A League).
Punsky commented, “I am thrilled and honored to join a first class organization that focuses on the development and placement of its players as their primary objective. I want to thank the Cape Cod Islanders and Owner Dan Hodge for offering me this tremendous opportunity.”
